Functions of Engine Oil
Engine oil is not just a lubricant; it also has cooling, cleaning, sealing, and anti-rust functions. It forms a protective film inside the engine, reducing friction and extending the engine’s lifespan.
Viscosity of Engine Oil
Viscosity is a crucial parameter of engine oil, directly affecting its flow performance and lubrication effect within the engine. The viscosity of engine oil is usually indicated by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standard, such as SAE 5W-30. The lower the number before the “W,” the better the oil’s flow at low temperatures; the higher the number after the “W,” the higher the oil’s viscosity at high temperatures(1).
Additives in Engine Oil
Various additives are added to engine oil to enhance its performance. Common additives include detergents, rust inhibitors, antioxidants, and anti-wear agents. Detergents can remove carbon deposits and dirt inside the engine, while rust inhibitors prevent metal parts from rusting(1).
Oil Change Interval
It is generally recommended to change the engine oil every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers. The specific interval can be adjusted based on vehicle usage and regional climate. When changing the oil, warm up the car to thin the oil, then drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and add new oil(1).
Storage of Engine Oil
Engine oil should be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight and high temperatures. The container should remain sealed to prevent moisture and dust from entering. If the oil is stored for too long, it may deteriorate, and expired oil is not recommended for use(1).
Development of Eco-Friendly Engine Oil
With increasing environmental awareness, eco-friendly engine oil is gaining attention. Eco-friendly engine oil not only has the lubrication and protection functions of traditional oil but also features low pollution, low volatility, and easy degradation, making it more environmentally and health-friendly(1).
